Open Channel Flowmeters: Innovations in Liquid Flow Measurement

Open channel flow monitoring is essential for measuring liquid flow in open conduits, such as wastewater effluent, agricultural irrigation channels, and stormwater systems. Traditionally, this involved using flumes or weirs in conjunction with liquid level sensors. However, with growing environmental concerns and the need for more efficient water management, there’s been a shift towards more advanced and accurate open channel flow measurement methods.

Area Velocity Measurement (AVM) technology has seen significant growth due to its application in water management, stormwater runoff, irrigation, hydroelectric penstocks, and industrial discharges. Recent ultrasonic technology advancements now allow for combined velocity and level measurement in one comprehensive solution, enhancing accuracy, reliability, and ease of installation.

SmartMeasurement, a pioneer in ultrasonic flow technology, offers a variety of open channel meters using area-velocity measurement techniques. Our range includes 2-4 path transit time ultrasonic Area-Velocity meters like the ALSONIC-AVM for clean and dirty channels, the ALSONIC-SAVM designed for cylindrical channels & sewer pipes, the popular non-contact ALSONIC-RAVM with microwave radar, and the traditional ALSONIC-DAVM with Doppler velocity and integral piezo level measurement.

Efficient Flow Measurement with ALSONIC-AVM

Transit-Time Multipath Approach

SmartMeasurement’s ALSONIC-AVM revolutionizes open channel flow measurement. It operates on the principle Q = v ● A, where Q is flow rate, v is fluid velocity, and A is the cross-sectional area. This principle applies to both enclosed pipes and open channels.

ALSONIC-AVM Functionality

The system combines transit time ultrasonic transducers with a user-supplied level transmitter. Users input the channel width, and the device calculates the flow area using the level sensor’s height data. Velocity is measured by ultrasonic transducers, with up to four pairs activating as water levels rise, ensuring accurate flow rate calculations.

Key Advantages

The ALSONIC-AVM excels in accuracy, measuring both area and velocity precisely. Suitable for various fluid conditions, it can handle up to 30% solid content. This adaptability makes it a reliable choice for diverse open channel applications.

Key Features and Functionality

  • Advanced Transit Time Transducers: Able to measure very clean liquids as well as dirty liquids of up to 30% particles or bubbles.
  • Ability to incorporate any Level Transmitter technologies: Users can choose any level technologies best suited for their application and connect the analog output to the SAVM flow computer for optimum Area Velocity Measurements.
  • Versatility : User can choose from 2-4 pairs of transducers  for conduits of greater than 1.5 meters and up to 40 meters of various shapes

Advantages of ALSONIC-AVM

  • Most accurate open channel measurement in the market: Accuracies of up to 0.5% of reading can be achieved for either clean or dirty liquids.
  • Laser alignment tool: The Alsonic AVM comes with a laser alignment tool than can  easily align pairs of transducers installed across the channel
  • Versatile Display Options: Graphic display providing signal strengths, sound speeds and various information pertaining to open channel measurements.
